Defiant, US ???
8 April, Captain Donald Lawson is in San Diego, Instagram : "Well the worse kept secret is finally official! We have acquired our 60ft record breaking trimaran!" ·
"I WOULD LIKE TO THANK MY SUPPORTERS, DONORS, AND PARTNERS FOR HELPING US MAKE THIS A REALITY! THIS ORMA 60 TRIMARAN HAS BROKEN TONS OF CREWED RECORDS, WON MULTIPLE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND HAS GONE BY 2 DIFFERENT NAMES UNDER 2 HISTORIC SAILORS. SHE WAS BUILT AS GROUPAMA 2 AND WAS SAILED WITH DISTINCTION BY THE FRENCH SAILOR OF THE DECADE, FRANK CAMMAS. SHE WAS THEN PURCHASED BY THE LEGENDARY SAILOR, HOWARD ENLOE. ENLOE AND HIS ALLSTAR TEAM, MIGHTY MERLOE, DOMINATED THE WEST COAST CIRCUIT FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS SETTING RECORDS EVERYTIME THEY HAD THE RIGHT WEATHER! ENLOE'S ALLSTAR TEAM OF SAILORS SET THE TRANSPAC RACE RECORD AT JUST OVER 4DAYS!! THE FUN FACT ABOUT THEIR RUN IS THEY REGULARLY BEAT THE MOD 70S WHICH ARE 10FT LONGER. WHEN I DECIDED THAT I WANTED TO COMPETE FOR WORLD RECORDS ON THE SAME LEVEL AS THE FRENCH AND THE GREATEST AMERICAN SOLO SAILORS, I KNEW I NEEDED A BOAT I WAS FAMILER WITH, ONE THAT WAS FAST, AND ONE THAT HAD A HISTORY OF DOMINATING. I TRIED TO GET THIS BOAT IN 2011 BUT GOT BEATEN OUT BY ENLOE. NOW, I AM MORE READY SKILLWISE AND MENTALLY FOR A PLATFORM THAT HAS ONLY KNOWN SUCCESS. MY GOAL IS TO CONTINUE THE LEGACY STARTED WITH FRANK CAMMAS AND MAINTAINED BY ENLOE. WE WILL BEGIN A WEST COAST TOUR IN MAY STARTING IN NEWPORT, CA ENDING UP IN SEATTLE IN MID JUNE. IF YOU ARE ON THE WEST COAST AND WANT TO MEETUP, LET ME KNOW AS WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU VISIT US AND GET A TOUR OF THE BOAT. WE WILL ANNOUNCE OUR RECORD PROGRAM LATER IN THE SUMMER BUT FOR NOW, WE PLAN TO CONTINUE WITH THE TOURS. A SPECIAL SHOUTOUT TO TWO OF OUR PARTNERS: @ERIC ECKENBERGER OF @crooked_halo_clothing AND @adamc.erickson Princeton Strategies YOU GUYS CAME ONBOARD AND HELPED GET US TO THE BOAT. THANK YOU TO @scottmarshall20 FOR ALL OF HARDWORK AND DEDICATION OVER THE LAST 2 YEARS. THANK YOU TO HOWARD ENLOE FOR BELIEVING IN ME AND SUPPORTING OUR PROGRAM. AND FINALLY THANK YOU TO MY PARENTS, ENLAWS, US SAILING AND MY WIFE, TORI @journi11seas FOR BEING MY ROCK AND SUPPORT. IT HASN’T BEEN EASY FOR US TO GET HERE, BUT WE HAVE GOTTEN THIS MAJOR STEP COMPLETE"
"In 2009, Lawson set out to find sponsorship that would allow him to acquire his own boat. This year it finally happened, in the form of a 60-foot trimaran, one of the world’s fastest sailing vessels. Starting in September, weather permitting, he’ll kick off a campaign to break 35 solo world records over ten years, beginning with a record attempt of the California-to-Hawaii transpacific route; in January 2024, he’ll attempt the solo nonstop circumnavigation. For the sailing class that Lawson’s journey will fit into, the current world record is 74 days. Lawson will attempt to do it in 70."

25 May, "Latitude 38°": "‘Mighty Merloe’ Visits San Francisco Bay", "Captain Lawson is starting his tenure with Mighty Merloe by sailing her from her former Southern California home up to Seattle, via San Francisco, as a way of introducing the boat and his Dark Seas Project to West Coast sailors. His primary mission for the boat is to take on some of the world’s great solo course records. An African American sailor, he is also chairman of US Sailing’s DEI committee and is carrying the message of diversity, equity and inclusion as well as environmental stewardship while he pursues his record-setting dreams."
